理由は、「for」の前置詞の後に続く単語は形容詞ではなく、名詞 または名詞句でなければいけないからです。「Late」 は形容詞ですので、「for」の後に続ける事はできません。

「Being」は動名詞であり、動名詞とは名詞なのでForの後に「being late」と続けることができます。

「Lateness」 は名詞なのですが、

誰の「lateness」かを明確にしなければ おかしな英語になってしまいます。

また、「I apologize for my lateness」は文法的には正確ですが、かなり丁寧な表現になります。

“Lateness” is a noun but in order to use it you must specify whose lateness you are apologizing for, otherwise the sentence is strange.

“I apologize for my lateness,” is a formal way of apologizing.  If you are speaking to a superior or someone of higher social standing you can try using this expression.
